What are the elements of White Risk?

White Risk is a comprehensive platform for avalanche prevention and consists of the modules TOUR, EXPLORE, LERN and Pro.

TOUR: This sub-site enables you to plan any number of tours completely online. It encompasses topographic maps with various additional layers. The Swiss topographical maps (Swisstopo) are supplemented with special avalanche terrain maps and slope angle layers as well as ski and snowshoe tours. You can enter personal planning data, e.g. information on conditions or weather, details of group participants, accommodation, travel etc. You also automatically receive an elevation profile with time calculation from your self-drawn routes. Another interesting feature is the automatic detection of cruxes (only for Switzerland) considering avalanche terrain. Tour plans are synchronized in the TOUR module of the White Risk app and made available there for use offline. They can also be printed in PDF format. The Standard plan gives you access to all topographic maps with additional layers and all planning options.

EXPLORE: In the knowledge section you can learn all about avalanches. Within the five chapters, you can learn a lot about avalanches or refresh your knowledge by means of texts and pictures, supplemented by animations and films as well as interactive tools. Whether you use EXPLORE to deepen your knowledge, as a reference book or simply to browse and try out, you will experience interactive avalanche knowledge.

LEARN: In a series of coordinated lessons, this module teaches you more about avalanche science step by step. Each lesson has a learning objective. Entertaining exercises serve as an incentive to put into practice and consolidate what has been learnt. You will receive direct feedback. At the end of each lesson you can test your newly acquired knowledge in a quiz. Each of the lessons also contains numerous links to related topics in the EXPLORE module.

PRO: White Risk PRO gives you access to the presentation module, which is used for teaching purposes in particular. In the Media Explorer you can download lots of visuals, images and videos for use in presentations (e.g. PowerPoint).
You can also use the specially developed, user-friendly Desktop Presenter to show interactive media offline and embed the content in PowerPoint presentations. Only holders of a valid PRO plan can access the Desktop Presenter. PowerPoint presentation templates are also available.

App: By way of the avalanche bulletin and snow and weather data, the smartphone app White Risk gives you up-to-date information about the snow and avalanche situation in Switzerland. The TOUR function provided by the app allows you to plot tours offline, edit existing tours, and display existing tours on maps. Any number of topographic maps with all the layers for any section can be downloaded, irrespective of the tours that you have planned. The smartphone’s GPS function shows the user’s current location on the trip plan. You can share planned tours directly with your friends.

Free version

White Risk kann in der Basisversion gratis genutzt werden, wobei die Anwendungen hier nur eingeschränkt zur Verfügung stehen:

TOUR: You only have access to White Risk TOUR with OpenStreetMap maps. These maps are not suitable for accurate tour planning purposes. In order to save trip plans and transfer them to the app, you must set up a user account.
EXPLORE: The knowledge section is fully accessible.
LEARN: The lesson ‘Avalanche danger ratings and warning signs’ is free of charge. All the other lessons are accessible to Standard plan holders.

All the other functions of White Risk can only be used if a plan is purchased.

Standard plan

With a White Risk Standard plan (CHF 29 per year), you gain access to the following information and applications:

TOUR: This module provides you with the best possible support when planning your tour, so that you can assess danger and risk by taking avalanche, snow and weather conditions into account in your planning. You can draw your routes independently and receive an elevation profile, a time calculation. You can also work with specific avalanche terrain map layers and detailed topo maps (1:25,000). From your drawn routes, cruxes can be detected automatically to quickly and easily identify typical avalanche terrain hazard. All planning data recorded on the web is synchronised with the TOUR module in the White Risk app. You can also print planned tours and share them with friends. Any number of topographic maps with all the layers can be downloaded with the White Risk app. Topographic maps with slope angle layers are available for Switzerland (swisstopo), France (ING) and Austria (BEV). White Risk TOUR is a tour planning guide, and the app is a dependable companion whenever you are outdoors.
EXPLORE: With the Standard plan you have full access to all the chapters of the Explore function. In five chapters of detailed information, arranged in the shape of a mountain with added images, animations and videos, you can learn about avalanches or refresh your existing knowledge. Whether you use Explore to means to deepen your knowledge, as a work of reference or simply for browsing and exploring, you will have an interactive experience of the avalanche knowledge.
LEARN: You have unrestricted access to all the available e-learning lessons, including the tests.

Pro plan

The PRO plan (CHF 58.00/year) is intended primarily for instructors and teachers hosting avalanche courses or other educational programs. It gives you additional access to the specially developed presentation tool Desktop Presenter and a wealth of media from the EXPLORE module, which can be downloaded and used in PowerPoint. The tool enables you to produce and deliver professional presentations that are rich in content. For presentation purposes the Desktop Presenter can be linked to PowerPoint. This plan also covers all the user options provided by the standard plan. The PRO plan allows you to purchase student coupons as well, so that you can use White Risk with your students at low cost.

Student coupons

Student coupons allow students or participants in an avalanche course to take advantage of the same opportunities as with a standard plan for a limited period of time. In order to purchase student coupons, you need a pro plan. You can buy coupons for any number of classes with up to 50 students per class and a maximum validity of 180 days. Each student needs his own White Risk Account and can redeem the individual coupon under User Account -> Coupons.
The price depends on the number of students and the period of time the coupons are valid for. Example: For 3 months and 30 students a coupon costs CHF 3.20.

Trial version

This version offers an insight into the compelling benefits of White Risk by giving you a one-time opportunity to enjoy 7 days’ free access to the full version of EXPLORE (all chapters), LEARN (one lesson), TOUR and PRO (restricted). It allows you to test the full functionality. Your trial registration will be converted into an account with free version after 7 days. You can purchase a plan at any time in your user account.

White Risk plans in general

Why do I have to pay for the White Risk plan every year?

Over the years, White Risk has developed considerably in terms of content, technology and visualization. The service is continuously being expanded and updates are performed regularly. The swisstopo maps the specific layers can be updated continuously. This means that you are always working with the most recent version of White Risk and the latest avalanche information, do not have to worry about installations and can use it any time, anywhere you have access to the Internet. The costs of the extensive service offered by White Risk is covered by the annual plan fees.

How do I make changes to my account or plan?

Within your user account you can review the status of your plan and edit your settings at any time. You can also cancel or renew your plan or change your payment details.

What happens when my plan expires?

With your payment you will receive an annual subscription, which will be renewed for another year after expiration. The subscription fee is automatically debited to the appropriate extent by the payment method specified. You can cancel the plan at any time in your user account. One week before the expiry of the plan you will receive an email reminding you that the plan is about to expire and will either be renewed automatically or you will have to renew it manually in your user account. If the plan has not been renewed, it will be downgraded to the free version. Your account and all its data remain active.

Login or payment

I cannot log in

Please check if the user name (e-mail address) and password are correct. If you have forgotten your password, you can reset it with the "Forgotten password" option. A link with which you can generate a new password will be e-mailed to you.

What payment methods are available?

You can pay easily and conveniently by Mastercard, Visa, American Express, Post Finance or TWINT.

Can I pay by invoice?

Invoices can be issued only for 10 or more Standard or Pro plans. Please note that the plans are not automatically renewed upon expiry. Place the order as follows:
